Jim Long joined William Woods University as information technology director. Long oversees the computer, telephone and cable networks, manages the university’s technology budget and is responsible for developing information technology strategies. The Fulton resident has more than 20 years of experience in games and management, most recently as the design manager of Virgil Games Inc.
Boone County National Bank appointed Patrick Madigan and C.O. Scheffer as assistant vice presidents. Madigan, who has 12 years of financial service experience, is now responsible for sales leadership in the investor services department. He has worked within the Central Bancompany for more than seven years. In 2010, Madigan joined Boone County National Bank as a financial advisor. Scheffer has been in financial services for more than seven years. He began his career with Boone County National Bank as a teller for the Lake of the Woods Bank.
Ron Schmidt will be the new project director for the Voluntary Action Center and will handle fundraising, marketing and the Christmas program. He is currently a social services specialist at VAC.
Designer Landscape LLC had several promotions: Jason Dubbert was promoted from design/sales estimator to commercial landscape foreman; Zach Bullard went from landscape laborer to commercial landscape lead man; Travis Mechlin was also promoted from landscape laborer to residential landscape lead man; Nathan Brown was a part-time laborer and is now residential landscape foreman; and Oscar Lopez-Vellasco was promoted from irrigation laborer to irrigation/maintenance foreman.
Paula Hertwig Hopkins has been named acting city manager. She will work with current City Manager Bill Watkins until he retires March 11, when City Council members will appoint an interim city manager until a permanent replacement is found. Hopkins said she is not seeking to fill his position permanently. Hopkins started working for the city as an assistant city manager in 2000. She has a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Missouri and is a graduate of the Police Training Institute.
Amy Schneider was appointed acting director of the Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau. Schneider has worked in the hospitality business for more than 16 years and joined the Columbia CVB in 2007 as a sales manager. She is an MU graduate with a bachelor’s degree in hotel and restaurant management. The former director, Lorah Steiner, left the CVB to accept a position with the Charlotte County Tourist Development Council in Florida.
Mayor Bob McDavid appointed a citizens’ committee to help pass a $49.5 million bond issue to purchase the Columbia Energy Center. Committee members include: Tom Baumgardner, John Conway, Bill Costello, Ernie Gaeth, Dave Griggs, Bob Hutton, Paul Land, Jim Loveless, Jeff MacLellan, Larry Moore, Tom O’Connor, Melody Parry, Dan Rothery, Vicki Russell and Mary Wilkerson. The city currently owns a portion of the center. Voter approval of the bond issue, Proposition 2, would allow the city to have full ownership.
Central Bank elected Joseph N. Scheppers to its board of directors. Scheppers has been chairman of N.H. Scheppers Distributing Company since 1997 and has been with the family business since 1978.
Walter L. Pfeffer II was elected to the board of directors of the Western Golf Association for 2011. He joins the current directors in overseeing the WGA’s championship and scholarship programs. Pfeffer is a 32-year representative for the Mutual of Omaha Companies and an active volunteer with the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Columbia public schools and the Mizzou Alumni Association.
Jean Hough is the 2011 chair of the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The walk is the largest nationwide event to raise funds and support for those with the disease.
The 2011 Boone County Council on Aging elected several new community leaders to its board of directors: David Whelan with Commerce Bank was elected president; Julia Settles with Ford, Parshall & Baker is the vice president; Adam Kliethermes with Cripps & Simmons is the treasurer; and Pat Fowler with MU is the secretary. Greg Jones with Jones & Watkins LLC is the past president.
City Manager Bill Watkins is retiring after 37 years of public service. He has served as city manager for Columbia since 2006. There will be a public retirement reception for Watkins on March 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Riechmann Pavilion, Stephens Lake Park, 2300 E. Walnut. There will be a special presentation to Watkins at 5:30 p.m.
Marissa Todd, project director at the VAC, has accepted a position with the Alzheimer’s Association. She will start with the association as the development director March 7.
Midwest Computech was named one of the US Chamber of Commerce’s 2011 Blue Ribbon Businesses of the Year. The awards are given to 75 companies nationwide that exhibit dedication to a growing client base, quality customer service, a strong community commitment and contributions to the free market system within their communities. Job Point announced its 2010 award recipients. ElTonya Rhoades, an executive assistant with the Columbia Housing Authority, was one of two individuals honored with an Award of Excellence for exemplary vocational and personal achievement. Local food service company Fresh Ideas LLC was named Employer of the Year for promoting the abilities of individuals seeking employment and greater participation in community life. Karenina Raymond, who works at Walmart in Jefferson City, was named Partner of the Year for her outstanding support
Columbia College announced changes to several department chairs for the academic year that begins in August: Danny Campbell, associate professor of English, will chair the humanities department. Campbell has been a faculty member since 2003. Brian Kessel, associate professor of political science, will head the history and political science department. Kessel has been with the college since 2000. Frank Somer, associate professor of physical chemistry, will chair the science department. Somer has been on the Columbia College faculty since 2003. Sally Wells, assistant professor of business administration, will chair the business administration department starting in January 2012, following her sabbatical. Wells has been on the college faculty since 1983.
Columbia College’s nursing program, which has been a part of the science department, will become a separate academic department chaired by Linda Claycomb. This change will take place at the end of the spring semester. Claycomb has been with the college since 2008.
