COLUMBIA, Mo.–Columbia is among the first Missouri cities to adopt a smartphone application with GPS tracking technology for its public transit system with the release of its DoubleMap app this August, pre-empting some of Missouri’s larger cities, such as Kansas City and St. Louis.

DoubleMap is a free mobile application that uses real-time GPS tracking to allow users to locate where city buses are on their route and receive an estimated time of arrival. Ultimately, the goal of the app is to decrease customer wait time at bus stops.

“The installation of this new technology is one of the first steps being implemented to revive Columbia Transit, as outlined in the CoMo Connect project, and we are excited to be able to offer this kind of service to the community,” said John Glascock, the director of public works in Columbia.

The DoubleMap app serves as an initial step of a larger transportation improvement plan that will occur during the next several months, according to Drew Brooks, transportation administrator at the public works department. The plan’s goals include developing a strategic plan for future growth, utilizing innovative concepts and processes and responding more quickly to customers and stakeholders.

The application can be downloaded for free on any Apple or Android device or other mobile browser. Desktop users can view the tracking features online at Columbia.DoubleMap.com/Map or via the Columbia Transit website at GoColumbiaMo.com.
